Development and Installation of an On-Line Film Reservation System

William M. Oard

Circulating sponsored — as opposed to rental — motion pictures has become a big business over the past four decades. By 1971, the problems of inventory control and scheduling had become so severe that a computerized approach was needed. After early experience was gained with a PDP-11/20 computer system, a PDP-11/45 was installed a year ago to manage information regarding inventory control, advertising production, film booking, film library services and film borrowers. Access to the system is through video and teleprinter terminals at the New York headquarters, and distribution is from 28 points across the country. The factors that led to choosing a particular computer system are recounted, and the advantages obtained are noted.
