The Arriflex 16 SR, a Universal 16mm Camera for Professional Use in Motion-Picture and Television Applications

Wilhelm Roth

The characteristic design features of the Arriflex 16 SR 16mm motion-picture camera are its symmetrically arranged controls (which permit left- or right-eye operation) as well as its very small dimensions. It is driven by a crystal-controlled motor and has a redesigned mirror reflex shutter with an open-shutter stopping position for ready access of framing checking through the finder scope. It also has a coupled exposure meter system which can be used either manually or in a fully automatic mode. In the manual mode, the f-stop can be preset and continuously readjusted during the take. In the automatic mode, exposure is continuously controlled by a servo motor unit, but instantaneous manual override is available. The magnifying finder scope can be rotated and pivoted in three directions. The technical design concepts of the camera and its mode of operation are described.
