Evaluation of Color Rendering in Film and Television

Leroy E. DeMarsh

An approach to evaluating the color rendering properties of film and television systems, which compares the physical characteristics of original and reproduced colors, using the CIE colorimetric system is inadequate. Taking into account the influence of the surround on brightness response, and modifying the CIE values accordingly, gives a color rendering index that is more plausible and more consistent with the known subjective quality of the image systems. More research is needed before a viable image color rendering index can be defined.
