Television Zoom Lenses of Modular Construction

Karl Macher

The basis is laid for a modular or building-block approach to constructing variable-focal-length lenses, often called “zoom” lenses, for television purposes. Substantial economies are realized by employing modular construction rather than going back to first principles in developing each new special purpose lens. The functions of optical groups or modules within a lens in terms of Gaussian (paraxial) optics and the Seidel aberrations are discussed. The TV Variogon 33–1000-mm, f/2.1… f/6.3 lens is considered in detail as a particularly good example of this method of construction.
