A New Digital Video Special-Effects Equipment

Reginald F. H. McCoy

A new digital special-effects generator is described that combines the functions of frame synchronizer and time-base corrector and permits a variety of effects that previously could only be achieved on film. From its capability of both compressing and enlarging an image, the system has been given the name “Squeezoom.” The design of the digital signal-processing equipment is discussed under four headings: input section, memory configuration, output section and control system. The Squeezoom is the first multiple-input picture manipulating system. Because it operates on-line and can accept up to four nonsynchronous inputs, it is expected to find wide application in news and sports broadcasting.
