A Universal Software for Automatic Switchers

M.W.S. Barlow, Murray Porteous

Switching systems used in radio and television broadcasting are in almost continuous use and cannot conveniently be taken out of service to make modifications. The larger the system, the more likely it is to require some modification as a result of operational needs. With computer control, various codes and displays also need to be modified to match the switcher changes. If a means could be found to pre-format, or “initialize,” the system in the field without requiring it to be returned to the factory, then a very useful degree of flexibility would be obtained. A hard-wired approach was considered, but a software design proved far superior. The resultant software is applicable to radio and television switchers of any size.
