Digital Techniques for Reducing Television Noise

John P. Rossi

A number of real-time noise-reduction techniques particularly suited for digital implementation are examined. In particular, the theory and application of digital coring as well as the implementation of different types of signal averaging processes to improve the subjective quality of television pictures are presented. Coring can provide S/N improvements of 3 to 6 dB, and signal averaging processes can augment the S/N of a television signal by 9 to 15 dB without any apparent loss of information.
