CBS' New-Technology Station, WBBM-TV: Station Design using Media Room, ENG, and other Advanced Technology

David Horowitz

WBBM-TV, the CBS station in Chicago, has recently been rebuilt utilizing new technologies and modern system techniques. The major features of the station are: installation of a Media Room; complete conversion to ENG; a News Control Room; an automated program-continuity system; and a remotely controlled transmitter system. The decision to provide these new facilities for WBBM-TV was made in order to take advantage of new technology and system concepts to improve the quality and flexibility of the station while reducing overall operating costs. Combining these technologies results in beneficial interrelations so that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. As a consequence, WBBM-TV can be described as an advanced, synergistic, new-technology station.
