Digital Videotape Recording: An Analysis of Choices

Joachim Diermann

While the last several years have seen the introduction of a great deal of digital television signal processing equipment, videotape recorders have remained analog. A quantum step in terms of performance, ease of operation, and serviceability will be required before digital VTRs will be viable. Questions of video and audio sampling rates must be solved for economic tape consumption and interchange with other digital video and audio equipment. Magnetic recording theory demands narrow tracks and long wavelengths for digital recorders. Several different scanning methods can be used in the digital VTR and have been shown to be practical in data and instrumentation recording.
