Automatic Transmission Systems for Television

R. W. Zborowski

It is expected that the FCC will soon authorize the use of automatic transmission systems for television. A microprocessor-based automatic transmitter controller is the heart of such a system. Expected provisions of the coming regulations include: (1) automatic monitoring and control of aural and visual rf output power, aural modulation level, and several visual modulation parameters; (2) automatic shutdown in the event of equipment failure (fail-safe provision); and (3) absolute executive on/off control from an attended monitoring/alarm site. A block diagram of an automatic transmission system is given, and a comparison is made of the VIR and VIT waveforms for facilitating reference measurements. Possible future developments are considered.
