Testing Camera Lenses by Projection

Paul Foote

A method for the fast and efficient checking of the suitability of motion-picture and television camera objective lenses consists in the use of a lens test projector. A test target reticle is projected through the lens to be checked and the projected image of the target is evaluated. In a brief outline, the early basic methods for lens testing are described from the 1920s and 1930s on. Initial difficulties in the making of targets and in obtaining suitable light sources for the test projector are mentioned. The fundamental requirements for such a projector and its screen are outlined. Current practices in the use of such equipment are explained.
