Variable-Speed Flying-Spot Scanner Telecine

Shin Ichiyanagi, Koichi Urabe

For the first time in Japan, a new telecine design has been equipped with a flying-spot scanner (PSS) system. The new telecine model tracks and scans a frame of the continuously moving film by combining a vertically oriented CCD-line sensor (which reads instantaneous positions of the moving perforation) with highly accurate deflection control equipment. The running speed of the film can be varied and adjusted as desired from still frame up to 48 frames/s, forward and reverse, by means of a single lever. Instantaneous starts and stops are also possible. The new design has many advantages when compared with ordinary telecine equipment. It is currently in use for program production at NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corp.).
