Transmission of Four Simultaneous Television Programs via a Single Satellite Channel
A demonstration project to transmit and receive four simultaneous television programs via a single satellite transponder was successfully carried out. The television programs were picked up off the air and transmitted by a 13-m earth station near Los Angeles and received by a 10-m earth station in Juneau, Alaska. The signals were then distributed over a 4000-subscriber CATV system, giving viewers their first opportunity to choose and watch four of the same TV programs seen in the Los Angeles area simultaneously. The system used a combination of baseband video and RF carrier multiplexing as well as temporal noise reduction techniques. The resulting pictures were considered excellent for home viewing.
