A Survey of Television Blanking Width Problems
The FCC Public Notice dated 16 June 1978, concerning excessive television signal blanking width, has caused broadcasters and program producers to reexamine their equipment and operating practices. After leaving the originating video source, both vertical and horizontal blanking can widen for a large number of reasons, many of which are inherent in today's broadcast equipment and operations. Because of the importance of this situation, an NAB Engineering Subcommittee on TV Blanking Widths has been established to undertake appropriate studies and actions with regard to the technical problems related to blanking widths in television broadcasting. This tutorial paper is sponsored by this subcommittee and reviews causes of blanking width increase, techniques of measurement, and possible solutions to the problems.
