The Automation of Large Program Routing Switchers in the CBC

Michael W. S. Barlow

Previous installations of automation by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. have been backed up by manual control systems capable of maintaining full service in case of automation failure. Recent projects have involved switchers of such large size that human operators could not maintain full service in case of an emergency. The design procedure has been to make the main system as reliable as possible, but to include facilities to minimize downtime in case of trouble and provide emergency and apology signals. The maintainability of the systems has been increased by adding redundancy, so that quite major maintenance can be performed during office hours and without interrupting the automatic switching.
