Low-Contrast Video Image Sensor — Performance and Considerations

Wayne W. Frame

Tests conducted with four prevalent types of image sensors show that the vidicon is the best choice for low-contrast applications. A specially constructed simulator confirmed, in the case of a vidicon camera, that preamplifier noise determines detection threshold for a small signal amplitude (low-contrast target) against a large amplitude background signal (such as the sky). In addition, the triangular noise spectrum associated with a vidicon preamplifier has been found to have a higher detection threshold than has an equal signal-to-noise ratio white noise case.
