Stereophonic Sound and Multilingual Television Broadcast Services by Multiplex Methods
The major reasons for the current interest in the use of multiplex methods for transmitting stereophonic sound and bilingual programs are reviewed. The TV multiplex system employing two subcarriers that is now in use for public service in Japan is described. The paper also outlines the TV multiplex system utilized by the national television network of Uganda, in which four FM subcarriers are used for multilingual news service as well as for voice communication between staff members of the different stations of the network. The technical problems that arise in TV transmitters and receivers when multiplex methods are employed are examined. The need for full compatibility with existing TV transmitting systems and the many millions of receivers now in service is emphasized. Various means for solving or minimizing the technical problems are described.
