Digital Video Recording — Some Experiments and Future Considerations
A number of experimental digital video recorders have been demonstrated over the last few years. As a result, both broadcasters and manufacturers have been stimulated to further explore their potential advantages. Many different experiments have been carried out in recent years at Sony Corp. In particular, in 1979 both an experimental NTSC recorder and two experimental PAL recorders were demonstrated. In this paper, technical details and data are given for the experimental NTSC recorder. Subjects treated included the video signal system, audio signal system, and error measurement. Future developments of digital video recorders are also considered. For this interim stage, the results obtained are very encouraging, with tape consumption being the same as that of the analog one-inch VTR. Some frequently mentioned inherent advantages of a digital video recorder have been confirmed. More work remains to be done, however, before a marketable machine can be designed.
