Effect of Contour Components on Picture Quality

Haruo Sakata

By conceiving of the visual sense in terms of a hierarchical structure, we have hypothesized that the reaction of feeling related to picture quality can be controlled by the visual perception. We considered the sense of “solidity” that is due to the spatial sine-wave pattern of light to be one form of visual perception. We found that this sense of solidity will be maximized at a certain optimal degree of the contour component. With respect to the general picture, we found that the degree of the contour components affects both the sharpness and the solidity of the picture.
