Color-Under Recorders: Limitations, Manual Correction, and Automated Enhancement

Yves Faroudja, Joseph Roizen

In a “color-under,” or “heterodyne,” videotape recorder the chrominance and luminance signals are recorded separately. Such recorders have a number of inherent limitations. Manual corrections can overcome some of these deficiencies, but multiple adjustments by the operator often lead to degraded results. An automated enhancement system that overcomes many of the remaining limitations of color-under machines has been developed and is described.
