A History of British Television

Phil Sidey, Bob Longman, David Glencross, Tony Pilgrim

This is an insider's history of the development and growth of television in the United Kingdom. The story begins back in the 1930's, with John Logie Baird's early mechanical scanning system for broadcast, and moves through the war years, the development of Independent Television, and into the present state of British broadcasting. Included in this discussion, along with the historical highlights of the development of British television broadcasting, is an analysis of the forces at work in shaping the BBC and ITV systems, and what has brought them to the crossroads they have reached today.
