Image Quality Transfer through Film and Television

Karel Staes, Lucien Hayen

The quality of motion picture projection or telecine reproduction of pictorial information is determined by a number of properties, such as tone reproduction, sharpness and graininess. These properties are themselves strictly related to the properties of the components of the system used to produce the reproduction. After an analysis of the relationship between image quality and basic properties of the system elements — such as tone reproduction, modulation transfer, granularity spectrum, and magnification — the image quality transfer in different systems used in motion picture and television is discussed.
