Advances in ENG/EJ Microwave Systems

E. J. Forbes

The increasing activity of ENG/EJ microwave systems throughout the television broadcast market brings about a need for reliable system design guidelines. With a better working knowledge of the factors which limit or impair system transmission performance, an engineer, whether director of a broadcaster's plant or a designer in the equipment manufacturing industry, will be able to efficiently develop a modern facility that will be slow to undergo obsolescence caused by time or by invading competitive forces. This paper provides, from practical and theoretical studies, useful guidelines illustrating trade-offs of performance for a variety of site, path, and equipment characteristics. The discussion provides a treatment of the subject of multipath distortion and its effect on both the audio and video channels. The advantages of digitized audio offer an insight as to the developments which we might expect in the 1980s with microwave transmission equipment.
