High-Power Single-Ended Discharge Lamps for Film Lighting

Robert Hall, Barry Preston

This paper describes a range of high efficiency tin/indium halide lamps, which possess excellent color rendering properties, making them highly suitable for daylight film lighting. Designed in 1- and 2 1/2-kW ratings, major advantages offered by these light sources are excellent maintenance of optical characteristics through the rated life, and excellent stability of the emission spectrum against changes in lamp power dissipation over a range of 2:1. Operation of the lamps from conventional ballasts is discussed, together with flicker-free operation from both dc power supplies and square wave ac semiconductor ballasts.
