Temporal Filtering Using Pixel Incrementing

Harro Bruggemann

A real-time technique is described for improving the S/N ratio of still, monochrome TV pictures based on a frame difference algorithm. The enhanced TV signal is fed to a digital frame store and is continuously available in normalized analog format for display during the signal averaging process. Some problems and solutions associated with the hardware realization of the technique are outlined, and the performance of a production-model “temporal filter” is described. A theory of operation is developed in an Appendix.
