Digital Video Coding Standards: Factors Influencing the Choice in Europe
The EBU has been actively considering the question of digital television coding parameters for some 10 years now — although most of the work directed specifically to studio applications has taken place during the past two years or so. This article summarizes the evidence considered by the EBU from the point at which all of its active members had decided that component coding was the best approach. It was on the basis of the evidence presented in this article that the EBU Technical Committee decided to propose a 13½: 6¾: 6¾ sampling standard.
