Considerations in the Illumination of Photographic Darkrooms

C. Bradley Hunt

An important aspect of safety in a motion-picture laboratory is safelight illumination for maximum visibility in darkroom areas. An understanding of the concepts of darkroom safelighting requires examining the phenomena of human visual perception, the sensitivity characteristics of photographic materials, and the operating characteristics of safelighting equipment. Laboratories can optimize their darkroom illumination by utilizing the proper type of safelight equipment, positioning it effectively in the darkroom work areas, and periodically evaluating its level of illumination for photographic effect.
