SMPTE Historical Note: The Involvement of the NFB in the Acquisition, Storage, and Preservation of Motion Picture Film
When the NFB was founded in 1939, it acquired space in the old Motion Picture Bureau premises at John Street in Ottawa. Since it came complete with a film storage space, the NFB automatically became the warehouse for all Government-produced film. After a while the few vaults in this space were overflowing and a new vault building was subsequently constructed in an area outside the approaches to Rockliffe Airport. Into this vault building went copious quantities of nitrate film including NFB printing materials as well as the military holdings and some German film from UFA. These latter acquisitions were unidentified but some did come with camera reports.
