A Test Target Series and Procedure to Assess Dynamic Luminance Reproduction of Film by Television
A series of test targets has been prepared and evaluated to demonstrate a simple technique for assessment of luminance reproduction of films by television. The film image was prepared from matte white, gray, and black targets of known reflectances on three different backgrounds. Measurement of the resulting television monitor luminances (or alternatively, measurement of screen luminances by optical projection of the film) yields overall transfer characteristics for low-, medium-, and high-key scenes. This paper does not attempt to answer the question of how the display should compare with the original scene luminances, but provides a photometrically valid procedure for exploring luminance reproduction of optical projection or television.
