Lubrication of 35-mm Release Prints for Extended Projection Print Life

Edward Mino, Rodney S. Perry

Current investigations continue to demonstrate the necessity of proper edge-waxing of 35-mm release prints to significantly extend projection life over that of unlubricated prints. This article reviews previous work and presents results of a recent trade lubrication survey, in which no laboratory surveyed produced prints having projection life as long as a properly edge-waxed control print film. Two 35-mm edge-waxing applicators suitable for in-line installation on processing machines and off-line batch use are also presented, along with recommendations for solution formulation, solution use rates, applicator operation, and film projection-life evaluation procedures.
