On the Origin of High-Frequency Biasing for Magnetic Audio Recording

Heinz Thiele

Three fundamental discoveries made magnetic recording possible: the invention of the magnetic tape itself, the ring-shaped magnetic head, and high-frequency biasing. The history of Weber's invention of high-frequency biasing is the topic of this article. The HF-generator, in its present form, was not in existence at that time as an additional amplifier. Until now, there has been a gap in the history of Weber's invention. Some documents, drafted shortly after World War II, have been discovered, which contain a detailed description of all the missing elements.
