International

The Seven Network inaugurated its 24-hour full-time international satellite link with the U.S. on April 1, 1983 (Fig. A-1). This circuit carries two video and accompanying sound channels on the Pacific lntelsat spare satellite on a half transponder. The technique used is Thompson Vidiplex, which has proven quite satisfactory for NTSC News signals from CNN and NBC. It is believed to be the first full-time International link using this technique. The signal is uplinked from COMSAT's Santa Paula earth station near Los Angeles, and received at the Seven Sydney, Australia, Television Centre. A privately owned innovative dual 12-m dish installation by Andrews using high-efficiency dishes is used with S.T.R. RF combining equipment to approximate the performance of a much larger antenna (Fig. A-2).
