Adaptive Contrast Corrector Using Real-Time Histogram Modification
Television images are reproduced on the screen of a cathode-ray tube where the contrast is limited and much poorer than that of the original scene. This article describes a system which modifies the signal transfer characteristics in order to obtain an image with the greatest contrast and maximum visual comfort under poor lighting conditions. The basic principle is to modify the histogram, while the correction (calculated in real time) is applied to the luminance signal. This method is most efficient for outdoor broadcast use, but the output transfer characteristic can be modified to achieve a new range of special effects.
