Advanced Television Systems Committee

The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) was established in 1983 to coordinate the development of U.S. national technical standards for advanced television systems. It was formed by the Joint Committee on Inter-Society Coordination (JCIC), whose organizations (the SMPTE, EIA, IEE, NAB, and NCTA*) are its charter members. Another 60 members and observers represent broadcasters, cable companies, program producers, professional and consumer equipment manufacturers, and satellite firms. The ATSC is organized into three technology groups — on improved NTSC, enhanced 525-line systems, and high-definition television.
