SMPTE Type D-1 Cassette Design Considerations
Unlike previous videotape cassette formats, the SMPTE D-1 format consists of a family of cassettes specifically designed to meet user-defined needs. Examination of broadcasters' needs and reference to recent improvements in basic cassette technology provided the starting point for an intensive study that led to agreement on the final design. The D-1 cassette family consists of three sizes of cassettes allowing for play times from 11 to 94 min. Identification holes allow the recorder/player to sense a variety of tape thickness and tape surface properties; four additional plugs are provided for user application. The design has been a cooperative effort between the EBU, SMPTE user groups, and manufacturers. This article describes the characteristics of the cassette.
