Curtis Chan, Takeo Eguchi

The first component digital videotape recorder (DVTR) was demonstrated to the public in 1986. This article presents an overview of this DVTR, beginning with a short history of events leading up to its development. Format specifications and associated standards are discussed, and the use of a single time-code channel instead of the alternate dual time-code system is explained. The system's tape transport and digital signal processor are outlined in terms of their performance, features, and capabilities. Finally, present and future applications of the DVTR in the broadcast and production marketplaces are considered.
