Transition to Digital Recording: An Emerging Trend Influencing all Analog Signal Recording Applications

Because it is not necessary to maintain as high a carrier-to-noise ratio for digital recording as for analog recording, the recording density of digital recording systems can be made much higher. The recording density upper limit can be set to ensure the data recovery with adequate bit-error ratio necessary for particular applications. By adopting digital recording, it is possible to obtain improved output signal characteristics with reduced tape use. Within a few years all newly introduced recorders, for various applications including audio, video, sensor outputs, and data, will be data recorders. Only a small number of recording formats are necessary to meet all data storage and retrieval requirements. Designed-for-application input and output devices make a general-purpose data recorder suitable for particular applications.
