A Review of the Signal Format Specification for the 4:2:2 Component Digital VTR

James H. Wilkinson

Following a brief introduction to the progress of standardizing the signal format of the 4:2:2 component digital videotape recorder, this article outlines the basic mechanical parameters of the tape track pattern. A brief summary of design requirements introduces the main topic of the recorded signal format. The remaining part of the article concentrates on five key aspects of the signal format, outlining many of the issues debated by both broadcast users and industry experts over the last two years. The aim is to provide a solid foundation for understanding the agreed format, particularly its longer term possibilities and comprehensive provisions for a robust signal format.
