Error-Correction Strategy for the New Generation of 4:2:2 Component DVTRs

C. H. Gillard

The performance of the digital videotape recorder (DVTR) is intrinsically linked to its error-correction strategy. This article discusses the error-correction processes associated with a 4:2:2 component DVTR. A short review of the performance of analog video recorders serves as a precursor to defining the requirements of the DVTR. The theory behind the correction techniques used is presented together with some implementation detail. Finally, the expected error performance of the chosen error-correction strategy, which conforms to CCIR recommendations for digital video recording, is discussed.
