Considerations for Improvement of an HDTV Digital VTR

Yoshizumi Eto, Masuo Umemoto, Toshiaki Kawamura

An experimental HDTV digital VTR was developed by Hitachi, Ltd., introduced at the 19th Annual SMPTE TV Conference, and demonstrated at NAB ′85. This machine operates at a bit rate of 460 Mbits/sec, which is the minimum rate needed to obtain HDTV picture quality and which appeared to be the maximum available bit rate for a practical digital VTR at that time. They have since conducted experiments leading to an improved HDTV digital VTR with even higher bit rates. This article discusses the coding parameters and requirements for a new 1-in. or 19mm HDTV digital VTR conforming to the 4:2:2 digital standard.
