SMPTE Tutorial Paper: An Overview of Solid-State Sensor Technology

Koichi Sadashige

In a short time relative to the age of the television broadcasting industry, high-quality, affordable solid-state video cameras will become available for the broadcast/teleproduction industry. The new solid-state devices in such cameras will overcome two long-standing operational shortcomings of tube-type cameras: their susceptibility to external vibration and their loss of resolution when there is relative motion between camera and scene. Advances in semiconductor device technology, including new capabilities for concealing imperfect pixels, will make this possible. The new technology and techniques are reviewed.
