Point of View: Evolution during Revolution

Guy Gougeon

The TV broadcaster is at once a program producer with a very wide range of interests, a program distributor, and the manager of a complex web of program delivery systems. He depends on advanced electronic technology in all these areas but his product is the entertainment, information, and enlightenment that appears on the viewer's screen. In an era of rapidly changing technology, explosive growth in delivery methods, and changing viewer tastes, he must make wise technical choices if his current product is to remain relevant and his business is to evolve into one taking advantage of the new technologies which meet the changed needs of the viewer. Some strategies for making these choices in production and distribution are presented, with a review of the possible choices.
