Type-C Format Audio Level Interchange Problems in Broadcast Operations: A Report from the SMPTE Study Group on Type-C Audio Levels on Interchange
A number of broadcasters have experienced record/play audio level interchange problems between Type-C format helical recorders of different manufacture. In the spring of 1986, these problems came under detailed analysis at the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC). When interchanged, the audio recordings made on Type-C format machines from the major manufacturers differed by 3 dB or more. This level difference led to several problems in day-to-day operations and was judged to be unacceptable. The pressing need for a solution led to the topic being presented to the SMPTE Video Recording and Reproduction Technology (VRRT) Committee. The purpose of this report is to provide a brief review of the known causes of the problem and the course of events that followed, while also reporting on the current activity of the VRRT Committee in this area.
