Technical Note: The HFC Fully Automated Proofing Printer
The Hollywood Film Co. (HFC) Proofing Printer is an upgraded version of the original unit, which received an Academy Award. The purpose of the printer remains the same. After the negative has passed through the color analyzer for electronic grading, it is sent to the proofing printer for a first trial print, which is a short strip of film made by exposing one or more frames of each scene. The result is a representation of the entire negative, to be used for correcting the color grading provided by the color analyzer. This correction is done as the scenes are projected on a film strip projector. The new HFC version of the proofing printer provides a servo film transport for automatically positioning the negative to print at exactly the frame the grader selected while using the color analyzer. It also has a new daylight printer chamber for printing in a daylight environment.
