Engineering Report

Richard G. Streeter

The year 1987 was a challenging and rewarding one. Reviewing the accomplishments of the engineering committees, it is clear that the delicate process of standardization was well mastered by this group of dedicated people and by the companies that support them. It was a proud moment for the Society when it was awarded an Emmy by the National Academy of Arts and Sciences for its contribution to the achievement of a world digital video recording standard, known as D-1. It is significant that this work was done in close cooperation with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which also received an Emmy for its contributions, and it demonstrates again that the Society has achieved international recognition as a major standards organization. This is a very important step in a world coalesced by the advances in international telecommunications, and in which only worldwide standards are ultimately practicable and economical.
