The ESbus: Its Use within the BBC

Michael M. Gleave

Through its involvement with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and its relationship with SMPTE, the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) has taken an active role in the development of the EBU-SMPTE serial remote control standard, the ESbus. To gain practical experience of this important standard, the BBC has implemented a remote control system using the ESbus which gives studios control over a centrally located group of VTRs. This system has now been operating for over 18 months. Having implemented this fairly basic system, the BBC is developing a flexible and comprehensive videotape editing system based on the ESbus, controlling up to six VTRs and various ancillary facilities. This article outlines the BBC's experience on both these projects and its ongoing commitment to the standard.
