HDTV Digital VTR

Considerable progress has been made in the development and refinement of an HDTV production system based upon the 1125/60 proposal. A North American SMPTE/ATSC standard for 1125/60 studio origination has been brought to fruition; a growing number of production facilities are coming into operation in North America and Europe; and some major productions, including two feature-length motion pictures for theatrical distribution, a 14-part television drama series, and a made-for-TV movie, have been successfully completed. This experience with the 1125/60 format has underscored a critical need for a new higher-performance HDTV VTR. A digital VTR designed to meet these requirements is described here.
