Multi-Dimensional Testing with Zone Plate Generators

John Horn

Zone plate techniques are not new; the detailed theory is well documented in technical literature dating back several years. But the concepts have not yet seen widespread application or understanding, particularly in the United States. A conceptual description of zone plate signal generation is presented, with comparisons between simple zone plate patterns and more common test signals. The more complex patterns, with their ability to exercise a system in horizontal, vertical, and temporal (motion) dimensions, are discussed in light of the sophisticated processing required for practical recording and/or transmission of the greater information content of enhanced or High Definition video.
