QDA — The Progressive-Scan Alternative for High-Definition Electronic Production Standards

Kerns H. Powers, S. Merrill Weiss

A new proposal is made for a preferred progressive-scan alternative to interlace as the standard for high-definition electronic production. Combining quincunx subsampling with digital-assist interpolation, the proposed QDA system can be recorded or transmitted in the same bandwidth as that of an interlaced standard of the same number of total lines and field frequency. Thus QDA achieves essentially the same static resolution but twice the dynamic resolution of interlace, making it a preferred choice for production and post-production. Simulations of the system, comparing its performance with that of interlace and of diagonally filtered quincunx methods, are described.
