HDTV Digital VTR at 1.2Gb/s and Consideration on Common Image Format

An HDTV Digital VTR is developed, based on the SMPTE-240M/BTA-S001 studio standard and the NHK guideline for HDTV-DVTRs. An HDTV signal digitized at 1.2Gb/s is recorded on 8 channels. A word error rate of less than 5 × 10 −5 is achieved by using a 1-inch metal particle tape on open reels, sputtered amorphous video heads and equalizers with 5-tap transversal filters. With the help of tape speed information obtained from the capstan-servo-system, stable clock recovery is assured for shuttle speeds ranging from −10 times to +10 times normal speed.
